This is the fourth time that McLean has been ranked the #1 hospital for psychiatry among all hospitals nationwide since U.S. News began its annual rankings of America’s Best Hospitals in 1990. This also marks McLean’s 15th consecutive year as the top freestanding psychiatric hospital and the 26th straight year being ranked among the top five psychiatric programs in the country.

“These results shine the national spotlight on the McLean Hospital community and the work done each and every day across our campuses throughout Massachusetts and Maine. While being named #1 is certainly wonderful, the greatest honor is knowing that we—as a community—are making a difference in people’s lives and that we—as an institution—remain a beacon of hope for those who need us most,” said McLean President and Psychiatrist in Chief Scott L. Rauch, MD.

For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures, and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

“For nearly three decades, we’ve strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “By providing the most comprehensive data available, we hope to give patients the information they need to find the best care across a range of specialties.”

Since 1811, McLean Hospital has been a world leader in the treatment of mental illness and substance use disorders, dedicated to providing a full range of high-quality, cost-effective, mental health services to our patients, their families, and the larger community. McLean is committed to training mental health professionals, to supporting basic and clinical research to understand the causes of mental illnesses, and to developing effective new means for their prevention and treatment.
