THE Ride for Mental Health: Fighting Stigma, One Mile at a Time

April 4, 2017 Print

On June 24 and 25, 2017, the Dorris Family is hosting the inaugural Ride for Mental Health in New Paltz, New York. THE Ride for Mental Health is one of the first charity bicycle rides in the country to support education, research and treatment for psychiatric illnesses. All proceeds will go to McLean Hospital in honor of a wonderful young man named Eric who died from mental illness at age 21.

Riders can opt to ride one or both days and can choose a 25-, 50- or 100-mile loop through the bucolic vistas of the historic Hudson River Valley. Riders will cycle past horse farms, vineyards, apple orchards, and panoramic views of the Catskills and the Shawangunk Ridge. A SAG (support and gear) vehicle will be on route carrying water, snacks, and repair equipment to help keep riders safe and able to complete their journeys.

The Dorris family plans to turn this ride into an annual event and hopes to raise at least $100,000 for McLean. In addition to supporting research and treatment, the ride is an effort to combat the stigma of living with psychiatric illness.

Participants are expected to raise a minimum of $1,000 each, and the first 150 registrants are invited to a celebratory dinner on Saturday evening inside the spectacular Mohonk Preserve.

“We’re thrilled to be organizing THE Ride,” stated Mac Dorris, CEO of Eric’s Ride, Inc. “It’s an incredibly beautiful area to ride a bike with great roads and wonderful scenery. This is one of the first rides ever to benefit mental health and will also help lessen the stigma associated with mental illness.”
