Treatment Approach

Our highly-skilled clinicians and support staff provide exceptional care for individuals addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, with or without other coexisting mental health conditions.

Care at Naukeag focuses on group and individual therapy, as well as medication consultations as may be appropriate. We utilize behavioral therapies such as cognitive behavior therapy and integrated group therapy. We stress the importance of attending to individual’s needs in the context of trauma-informed care.

At Naukeag, we recognize the importance of building a sense of community in recovery and provide ample opportunities for patients to engage in a variety of peer recovery activities.

Cost

McLean accepts Medicare, Massachusetts Medicaid, and many private insurance and managed care plans. Insurance coverage may be limited for some services, especially for longer-term residential treatment.

Rachel D. Tester, MS, APRN

Rachel D. Tester, MS, APRN, Program Director

Ms. Tester serves as the program director for the Division of Alcohol, Drugs, and Addiction. She is also engaged in teaching as a faculty member of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) addiction psychiatry training program, as well as precepting advanced practice nurse interns. She is actively involved in developing and implementing strategic priorities for advanced practice providers (APP) as an inaugural member of the MGB APP Council.

Gerardo Gonzalez-Haddad, MD, Medical Director

Dr. Gonzalez-Haddad has more than 20 years of experience in clinical services, research, and teaching in addiction psychiatry. Originally from Colombia, he trained in Colombia, England, and the U.S. His clinical and research expertise includes the treatment of co-occurring addiction disorders as well as medication treatments and psychosocial interventions for substance use disorders. Dr. Gonzalez-Haddad is also an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Our staff consists of a multidisciplinary group of board-certified psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers and mental health counselors, and more.

This highly trained and experienced team engages with patients to plan and implement high-quality treatment and aftercare options tailored to each individual’s needs.

Accommodations at Naukeag include comfortable, single and double occupancy bedrooms and common areas with ample room for both group therapy and leisure time. Patients have access to an onsite fitness center as well as games and activities.

Who benefits most from the Addiction Treatment Center at Naukeag?

Our residential program focuses on treating individuals with serious substance use conditions who are stable, post detox, have manageable mental health and physical symptoms, who want and agree to come to rehab, and are motivated for treatment.

Is family involved in treatment?

Family involvement is strongly recommended. With permission of the patient, family members can be involved in assessment and in treatment/aftercare planning.

Is smoking permitted?

At Naukeag, we address tobacco use as a substance use disorder and encourage patients to quit. Nicotine cessation treatment, including medications and behavioral interventions, is available.

Tobacco products are not allowed inside the buildings, though there is one designated smoking area outside. Cigars, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes are not allowed on the premises.

When are visiting hours?

Visitors are permitted, following program policies. Visiting hours are 2-8pm, seven days a week.

Are cell phones allowed?

Patients are allowed to hold and use their cell phones, except during therapy (individual and group), with some guidelines to prevent disruption of the program and other patients. Cell phones may be taken away if they interfere with treatment.

Is aftercare planning a part of the program?

The treatment team works closely with the individual as well as with family, significant friends, and outside providers to develop a personalized aftercare plan. Recommendations by staff are made based upon clinical needs, progress made during treatment, and long-term treatment goals.

Can former patients access their medical records?

All requests for medical records should be directed to McLean’s Health Information Management Department.

Are support groups offered during and after treatment?

To complement our programs’ services and encourage individuals’ initiatives in their own treatment course, many self-help groups are hosted by McLean.

Does McLean gather patient feedback?

McLean is dedicated to maintaining high-quality and effective patient care. To ensure that those standards remain at the highest level, we utilize a number of feedback instruments and quality indicators.

Among these tools are the Perceptions of Care survey which monitors patient satisfaction and BASIS-24™, a psychiatric outcomes measurement tool created at McLean and widely used in the U.S. and around the world, which delivers feedback on the patient care experience.
