Bin Song, PhD, works on signaling transduction and gene regulation of neuronal survival and apoptosis (programmed cell death) in service of the development of new therapeutic targets for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). Dr. Song’s early research was focused on the role of certain proteins during neuron survival/apoptosis. Understanding the cellular function and regulatory mechanism of these key pathways will contribute to clarifying the molecular basis of neuronal apoptosis and identifying new neuroprotective agents for PD.
Recently, Dr. Song’s research is focused on cell therapy for PD using human iPS-derived dopaminergic neurons. Also, she is investigating potential molecular targets for novel neuroprotective and mechanism-based therapeutics for PD using 6-OHDA rats/mice and MPTP mouse models.
