Biography:

Julie M. McCarthy, PhD, is clinician-scientist at the McLean Imaging Center. Her research aims to identify neurobiological and psychosocial treatment targets for individuals with co-occurring psychotic and substance use disorders. She is particularly interested in using a multimodal approach to better understand and reduce barriers to motivation, including stress, cognitive control difficulties, and anhedonia, with the goal of enhancing motivation for recovery-oriented behavior change.

Dr. McCarthy’s work has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as well as awards from the National Institutes of Health, College on Problems of Drug Dependence, and the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology. Dr. McCarthy is a clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based treatments, like cognitive behavior therapy, for schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety, and in working with families who are interested in helping someone with addiction.
