Julie M. McCarthy, PhD, is a National Institute on Drug Abuse T32 research fellow at the McLean Imaging Center. Her research aims to identify neurobiological and psychosocial treatment targets for individuals with co-occurring psychotic and substance use disorders, such as schizophrenia and tobacco use disorder. Dr. McCarthy is particularly interested in using a multimodal approach to better understand and reduce barriers to motivation, including stress, cognitive control difficulties, and anhedonia, with the goal of enhancing motivation for recovery-oriented behavior change.
Dr. McCarthy has received a National Institute of Mental Health Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA), and awards from the National Institutes of Health, College on Problems of Drug Dependence, and the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology. Dr. McCarthy is a clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavior therapy, for schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety.
