Dr. Sonntag's scientific interest is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative and other diseases of the central nervous system and to develop new therapeutic tools using gene and cell therapy approaches. He is working with postmortem human brains and a multitude of in vitro and in vivo model systems, including pluripotent stem cells and lentivirus vector technologies, to study normal and abnormal cell development and function in psychiatric and neurological disorders.
Dr. Sonntag is currently an associate stem cell researcher for the Division of Basic Neuroscience at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Author of numerous journal articles, he is on the editorial board of publications including Journal of Translational Medicine and Brain and Behavior.
