Myth, Interrupted: The Truth About BPD and Self-Harm

A FREE Course for Health Care Professionals, Educators, and More

Thursday, April 24, 2025 @ 11am-4:30pm

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and self-harming behaviors are often misunderstood, leading to stigma, misdiagnosis, and ineffective support. This comprehensive virtual course is designed to change that by equipping health care providers, educators, and families with the knowledge, skills, and compassion needed to better understand and assist individuals struggling with these complex challenges.

Led by mental health experts from McLean and beyond, and featuring a powerful firsthand account from someone with lived experience, this course will provide deep insight into the emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and interpersonal difficulties that characterize BPD and other similar disorders. We’ll also break down the harmful stigmas that often prevent individuals from seeking help and discuss ways to foster understanding and acceptance in clinical, educational, and personal settings.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will explore the psychological roots of self-harm, learning to recognize warning signs and respond with effective, evidence-based interventions—such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, emotion regulation strategies, and harm-reduction techniques. We’ll also address the importance of establishing healthy boundaries while maintaining a supportive and empathetic approach to avoid burnout and compassion fatigue.

This course is not just about education—it’s about changing the conversation around BPD and self-harm, challenging misconceptions, and promoting a more informed, stigma-free approach to mental health care. Whether you’re a professional, an educator, or a loved one of someone struggling, you’ll leave with practical tools and a renewed sense of confidence to provide support.

This course is free for all attendees. Continuing medical education credits or a certificate of attendance are available for a small fee.
