Health Insurance

Information for Patients and Families

McLean Hospital accepts Medicare, Massachusetts Medicaid (which limits coverage for alcohol and drug addiction services to outpatient care), Blue Cross, and many other private health insurance plans. The hospital also has working arrangements with many managed care companies.

More information on insurance providers accepted by McLean Hospital may be found on the Mass General Brigham website. You may also find it beneficial to review McLean’s patient billing and financial assistance information.

Most health insurance policies provide benefits for psychiatric services. However, access to these benefits is sometimes restricted or limited, particularly for certain types of comprehensive care.

In general, short-term inpatient, partial hospitalization (day treatment), and outpatient services are usually covered by insurance, while benefits for residential and long-term care may be limited.

Most insurance companies also require precertification for inpatient and partial hospitalization (day treatment) services.

We Are Here To Help

We will work with you and your family prior to admission and throughout the course of treatment to determine the most cost-effective treatment that meets clinical needs.

If you have any questions about the extent of insurance coverage, we strongly recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to determine potential coverage available for treatment.

When speaking to your insurance carrier, it may be useful to inquire how insurance benefits cover room and care rates, physician or other professional fees, and the amounts of self-pay balances, co-pays, and deductibles.

Some of McLean’s program are self-pay, therefore they do not accept insurance or assist with insurance reimbursement efforts. However, some fees at these programs may be recoverable through insurance.

Please direct questions about insurance benefits or billing to a patient accounts representative in Patient Financial Services at 617.855.3304.

Important Medicaid Redetermination Update

On April 1, 2023, Medicaid (Masshealth in Massachusetts) returned to its normal annual renewal process. If Medicaid has enough information to confirm your eligibility, your coverage was renewed automatically.

If Medicaid was not able to confirm your eligibility automatically, you will receive a renewal form in a colored envelope (blue in Massachusetts, yellow in New Hampshire) to the mailing address on file. If you receive any communication from Medicaid in the mail, do not ignore it, act now to avoid disruption or loss of coverage.

Please visit your state’s website to ensure Medicaid has your most current information.
