McLean Hospital Announces New Online Author Discussion Series

Launches June 10, featuring Dr. Jill Stoddard discussing women’s mental health and empowerment

May 19, 2021

Coming on the heels of its successful educational webinar series aimed at increasing understanding of and reducing stigma about mental illness, McLean Hospital’s Office of Education Outreach has announced it is launching a new online series featuring popular authors.

“The idea for this new author discussion series came as a result of an outpouring of requests for a McLean book forum from people who have attended our webinars,” said Jennifer Kearney, host of McLean’s webinar series and Education Outreach communications manager. “We believe that offering this new forum will provide authors a great opportunity to discuss their mental health passion with an eager audience that is actively engaged in learning about mental health.”

Kearney noted that the McLean author series, being offered exclusively online, will launch on June 10 at 8pm, featuring popular writer, podcaster, and speaker Jill Stoddard, PhD. A psychologist, Stoddard is the author of “Be Mighty: A Woman’s Guide to Liberation from Anxiety, Worry, and Stress Using Mindfulness and Acceptance.” Her talk, like her book, will discuss women’s empowerment and explain the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

“We are at a critical time, when anxiety and stress are at an all-time high, and women and girls, in particular, are facing unprecedented mental health and societal challenges,” said Stoddard, who is the director of the Center for Stress Anxiety Management in San Diego. “The more we are able to recognize the detrimental impact of stress, worry, and anxiety and begin to address these issues with evidence-based practice, the more we will be able to live a healthy, productive life.”

Stoddard has also authored “The Big Book of ACT Metaphors: A Practitioner’s Guide to Experiential Exercises & Metaphors in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy.”

According to Kearney, one of the goals of the author series is to provide people who are interested in learning from national and international experts with a fun and interactive forum in which they can learn and engage.

“We found that by having an open and honest dialogue, where almost no question goes unanswered, we have built a reputation for being a source of truth about mental illness,” said Kearney. “This new series is an extension of what we have already developed, allowing us to expand on topics addressed in our webinars while also inviting new faces to our screens and identifying resources that can be beneficial to all.”

Kearney, who is passionate about mental health education, encourages people to participate in the new author series and if they haven’t already, sign up for the hospital’s weekly webinar offerings.
