Scholarships for Nursing Programs Promote Quality Patient Care and Professional Satisfaction
Congratulations to Amy Clark, RN, Michelle Kelly, MHS, and Mary Grace Treschitta, MHS, the 2013 recipients of the annual nursing scholarships from the McLean Nursing Department, which has long recognized that encouraging staff members to return to school for BSN, MS, or PhD degrees promotes McLean’s mission. Supporting nurses, mental health specialists, and community residence counselors in academic nursing programs is an investment well worth making.

From MHS to Certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Working as a mental health specialist (MHS) at McLean inspired and supported Molly Jepsen as she planned her career path. In fact, serving as an MHS has also clarified work choices for many of her colleagues. Some decide to attend nursing or medical school, while others train for social work or counseling. “Being an MHS at McLean is a great experience. It means being immersed in the milieu and learning to recognize changes in a patient’s status,” she said recently. “I also learned to communicate with patients, which is something I didn’t know how to do before I began at McLean. An MHS learns to understand the nursing process.”

Reflections from the First Nellie Blumenthal Fellow

After earning a degree from Boston College as a nurse practitioner in May 2012, she wanted support and experience as she transitioned from school into professional practice.

Learning from Patients in the Rural Dominican Republic
As I boarded the plane to the Dominican Republic, I recalled my introduction to that country with Los Medicos Valadores, when I was a third-year undergraduate nursing student. I wondered how this new journey with Intercultural Nursing Inc. would differ from my first trip, now that I am a registered nurse and nurse practitioner graduate student.

One Nurse’s Journey
Throughout my undergraduate education, I prepared myself to pursue a PhD career in clinical psychology. I sought research opportunities outside of my course load, completed a senior thesis, and even held a part-time job in the psychology department. I knew that I was destined to help others on a larger scale and advocate for significant changes in the field of mental health.
