Announced to the public on October 23, The Campaign for McLean Hospital has seen a $10 million increase since the fall and as of March 1 has reached $95.7 million toward its $100 million goal. One of the most recent campaign priorities to come to fruition, thanks to an extraordinary $5 million gift from an anonymous donor family, was the completion of a new wing on the Admissions Building. This construction project is the largest capital expansion undertaken on McLean’s Belmont campus since 1999 when an addition was added to the Mailman Research Center. After a ceremonial ribbon cutting, patients and staff moved into the nearly 21,000 square foot addition on February 16.
For years, psychiatric inpatient beds have been in short supply in the Commonwealth and nationwide. Long waits for appropriate psychiatric care frequently result in over-taxed emergency departments and increased stress on acutely ill patients and their families. In a recent one-year period, 21% of Massachusetts’ psychiatric beds were eliminated. As of 2015, there were approximately 2,400 adult inpatient psychiatric beds in the state, with 182 at McLean and another 171 through the balance of the Partners HealthCare system. Demand has consistently exceeded supply.
McLean leadership, recognizing the acute need for more access to inpatient psychiatric care, included in its seven-year strategic plan the goal of extending services as well as strengthening facilities and infrastructure to meet this need. The 21,000 square feet of new construction coupled with another nearly 8,000 square feet of newly renovated space in the Admissions Building is in direct response to this strategic goal.
The new wing makes a big leap forward toward mitigating this critical issue. The addition of 31 new inpatient beds will dramatically improve timely access to care for those in need throughout Greater Boston. In addition to the much-needed beds, the project includes expanded space for the clinical and research activities of McLean’s Psychotic Disorders Division.
“We are delighted to have completed a major capital expansion that will enhance access to psychiatric inpatient care,” said McLean’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Michele L. Gougeon, MSS, MSc. “The Admissions Building addition was designed with input by our clinical staff and facilities team to specifically meet the needs of patients and families.”
