Biography
Benjamin C. Silverman, MD, is the senior IRB chair at Mass General Brigham. He is additionally director of ethics for the McLean Institute for Technology in Psychiatry, chair of the Mass General Brigham Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) Committee, and at Harvard Medical School, he serves as an instructor in psychiatry, part-time, and a faculty member in the Center for Bioethics.
Dr. Silverman’s academic interests center on research ethics, in particular pertaining to research conducted with vulnerable populations. His recent work has focused on the ethics of digital phenotyping research, including examining how to adequately consent participants for this type of research, how and when to return complex algorithmic-based research results to participants, and investigating issues of equity, justice, and bias.
