McLean Hospital 115 Mill Street Belmont, MA 02478
Addiction to alcohol, opiates, or other substances is a serious psychiatric illness, most often complicated by other mental health diagnoses such as depression and anxiety. At McLean Hospital, we are committed to providing exceptional clinical care to help individuals work toward recovery.
Our 30-day Signature Addiction Recovery Programs are ideal for those who:
The Signature Addiction Recovery Programs—Fernside and Borden Cottage—specialize in treating men and women who have previously completed a treatment program but have relapsed or are at risk to relapse, who are ambivalent about making the changes needed to maintain sustained recovery, or who have tried other treatment programs but were not ready for and/or satisfied with the previous care.
We also offer a specialty track for those who have remained abstinent from substance abuse but have psychiatric issues that need to be addressed to foster full recovery.
Our dedicated intake staff works directly with individuals and their families to determine the best treatment program for each patient’s needs. As the Signature Addiction Recovery Programs are self-pay, we do not accept insurance or assist with insurance reimbursement efforts. However, some fees may be recoverable through your insurance provider.
Our Signature Addiction Recovery Programs are two state of the art, luxury alcohol and drug abuse rehab settings. A restored historic inn, our Fernside program is located near Wachusett Mountain in scenic Princeton, Massachusetts. Borden Cottage, located in Camden, Maine, offers discreet care in a setting that offers a 270° view of Penobscot Bay. Both locations are beautifully furnished throughout, and all bedrooms are private and include full baths.
“I was so afraid when I went in. I didn’t know what to expect. But it was such a comfortable, warm environment. I felt safe. It did not feel like I was in a hospital. I was actually glad to be there getting help.”– Former Fernside patient
As an alternative or supplement to inpatient care, Fernside and Borden Cottage are 30-day residential substance abuse treatment programs with comprehensive around the clock care and supervision in a home-like, unlocked setting. A month long stay at the program allows individuals the opportunity to concentrate only on their treatment and is recommended to ensure success and sustained recovery. Both programs utilize treatment models based on clinical and neuroscience research, including studies conducted by researchers in McLean’s Substance Use Disorders Division. A combination of individual and group therapies, along with education for residents and their families, provides a structured environment for individuals to work toward recovery.
By tailoring treatment plans to fit specific needs, the Signature Addiction Recovery Programs help individuals focus not just on their addiction, but on co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses as well. Our compassionate treatment teams recognize individual needs and work one on one and in small group settings to help residents take the necessary steps toward conquering alcohol and drug addiction.

McLean provides individualized care designed to address the mental, physical, and spiritual components of addictive disorders by integrating proven (empirically supported) treatment models with 12-step and other self-help resources. Treatment is provided under the supervision of Harvard Medical School-affiliated clinicians who are experts in substance use disorders and related psychiatric conditions. The programs combine intensive individual therapies, small group treatment, and extensive health education with a comprehensive mind and body recovery program that includes yoga, individualized fitness plans, nutrition education, smoking cessation, and expressive art and music therapies.
Our programs utilize an effective recovery and rehabilitation approach to alcohol and drug abuse as well as to the conditions that often accompany addiction such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. We use evidence-based psychological treatments that help individuals build more constructive thoughts and behaviors including motivational enhancement therapy (MET), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Intensive onsite diagnostic assessment includes medication evaluation and management.
As family is crucial to the ongoing success of recovery, hands-on support and education is offered for family members and significant others. We also work in close collaboration with referrers and community providers to provide tailored aftercare planning to facilitate and implement an effective post-discharge treatment strategy.
McLean’s Signature Addiction Recovery Programs each provide attentive, individualized care for drug and alcohol addiction. The 30-day programs are ideal for those who require treatment following the completion of detoxification or who have addictive disorders complicated by other psychiatric issues such as depression and anxiety. Individuals seeking longer-term individualized care in a discreet, serene setting or who require medication evaluation and management will also benefit from the programs.
